I’m always on the look out for new recipes to try. I get bored baking with the same old ingredients. When I came across this I just had to try it. Chocolate chip cookies with a little extra protein? Sounded good to me. It was difficult to find crickets around here this time of year, but I finally tracked some down at a local bait shop.
Cricket Cookie Recipe
Ingredients:
2 1/4 cup flour
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. salt
1 cup butter, softened
3/4 cup sugar
3/4 cup brown sugar
1 tsp. vanilla
2 eggs
1 12-ounce chocolate chips
1 cup chopped nuts
1/2 cup dry-roasted crickets
Directions:
Preheat oven to 375. In small bowl, combine flour, baking soda and salt; set aside. In large bowl, combine butter, sugar, brown sugar and vanilla; beat until creamy. Beat in eggs. Gradually add flour mixture, mix well. Stir in chocolate chips, nuts and crickets. Drop by rounded teaspoons onto ungreased cookie sheet. Bake for 8-10 minutes.
I had to figure out how to dry roast my live crickets. I found a recipe for that at NYWorms. It was pretty simple. You put them in the fridge for a bit to slow down their metabolism so that they lay still on the baking sheet. Then you put the critters in a 200 degree oven for about an hour or until completely dry. Test by crushing one of the baked insects with your fingers. A well-done cricket crumbles easily.
April Fool’s! I didn’t really make these cookies, wouldn’t even consider it. However, this is a real recipe. Find it and other strange foods at Wild Recipes.
that is nuts! Have you seen that show with Andrew Zimmerman? The bizarre foods show on the Travel Channel. This reminded me of that…
Ha! Ha! You got me! I was just thinking, “Wow! I can’t believe she did this!” 🙂
