Hoosiers

Posted on March 29, 2010March 11, 2013

It’s that time of year again when I write my obligatory NCAA basketball post.

(Que the soundtrack to Hoosiers.)

I have to do it.

See, I grew up in Indiana.

Basketball is more important than God, country, education, and, well, pretty much everything else there.

And NCAA basketball is basketball at its best, unmarred by the big money and fame of the NBA. (With the exception of those schools whose programs violate the NCAA rules.)

The thing about the NCAA tournament is that all it takes are six players with enough heart, and the underdog can win it all. Who doesn’t like a good underdog comes from behind story?

And this year there’s a great story in the making.

Next Saturday tiny Butler University from Indiana with less than 5,000 students takes on big Michigan State with its almost 50,000 students in the NCAA semi-final.

Oh my. It’s just like the movie.

And I don’t know what to do.

Do I root for little underdog Butler from the state I grew up in?

Or do I root for Michigan State, the university from the state I’ve lived in for almost 13 years now? The state that’s the underdog of states right now, with the worst economy in the country. What a boost to Michiganders’ spirits if we could cheer the Spartans onto victory.

I remember how we all rallied behind the Spartans last year when they played, and sadly lost to North Carolina, in the final game.

I’m torn.

But I think I have go with Butler.

The excitement and emotion wrapped up in Indiana basketball is just too much to resist.

Girl, I don’t even watch basketball, and I’ve never seen Hoosiers. I’m really starting to get worried….I confessed in a comment earlier this week that I’ve never had anything from Starbuck’s…now I’m confessing that I don’t even know what March Madness is and I haven’t seen Hoosiers…the “grown up police” are going to come and get me…Can I still read your blog?

My team isn’t even in it, so I wasn’t sure who was playing! It would be hard not to pull for that little bitty school! Sounds like an interesting match!

Uh, I don’t watch basketball. In fact, I don’t watch any sports except for Biggest Loser and I’m not even sure that show qualifies as a “sport”!! But I say go with your gut…it’s never wrong!!

That’s OK, Amanda, I was pulled in because I thought the Hoosiers reference was to Bob and Doug Mackenzie, Canadian icons, so I see the grown-up police is coming for me as well.

I would root for the underdog.

    Stopping by from SITS.

Oh dear… I don’t follow sports at all. Well maybe just when Iowa State is playing University of Iowa, then all hell breaks lose in our nearby college town and I know not to go shopping on that night.
