There was much excitement today here in West Michigan, because President Obama came to Kalamazoo Central High School to give the commencement speech.
I didn’t even think about trying to go see him. There was no way we could get into the ceremony, and I’m not much for standing in crowds along the street to catch a brief glimpse.
We were out all day running errands, so we didn’t even pay attention to all the news surrounding the visit.
Then tonight just a few minutes before 9:30 Dave and I were sitting in the living room. We heard a low rumble, and the house started to shake. The rumble got louder.
“That’s the president!” Dave said. We jumped up, and ran out onto the porch to see three helicopters fly right over our house. I ran in and grabbed my camera. Three more helicopters followed.
One of the six was Marine 1 carrying Obama from the airport in Kalamazoo back to Air Force 1 waiting at the airport in Grand Rapids. Our house happens to be right in the flight path between the two.
Jets go over our house all the time.
But this was a first.
I know the photo isn’t great. I wasn’t expecting President Obama, or I would have had the camera all set up on a tri-pod in the front yard for him.
We aren’t positive, but we’re pretty sure Marine 1 is the helicopter in the back in the picture above. You can’t see it in the photo, but that one had a lot more stuff on it. Yeah, stuff. That’s a technical term.
Hey, I was excited. It’s not every day the president flies over your house.
That is so cool! I would have grabbed my camera too. 🙂
Ok seriously — that’s about the coolest thing ever. And here I totally forgot he would even be in West Michigan. 🙂
Wow, that’s pretty cool! A few years ago, President Bush was speaking at a meeting hall across the street from my house – for 4 hours before, during, and after the event the whole street was blocked off by Secret Service. They wouldn’t even let us out of the neighborhood!
Very cool! When Pres. Ford died, the flew him over the house here in Wayland. Sad but also cool. I excited ran out of the house to watch them flyover, too. No photos, though.
That is very cool! I woulda done the same thing. :o)
That is cool! And thank goodness you got some kind of picture!
Which 5 of the six were the decoys?
I didn’t even know that and I live nearby. You’re a Michigan girl??? How come I didn’t know that either!!! I’m in Berrien county!
Wowee, that’s really exciting!! 🙂
Those helicopters are some kinda awesome, aren’t they? I’ve lived in the DC area forEVER, and I never tire of seeing the copters and the motorcades. Pretty neat stuff, I’d say…
That’s exciting. And exciting for the students. How did they get such an opportunity?
Last Post: questions, questions, questions.

There was a national contest that schools competed in to win one of three opportunities to have the president deliver their commencement speech, and Kalamazoo Central was one of the schools chosen.
That is very exciting! I would have had everything set up if I knew too!
I am so not for crowded places to get a little peak of someone famous, even if it is the president!
