Last Sunday was a beautiful sunny day. The high for the day was 84! That’s unheard of around here in April. So after church we headed down the road to the city of Allegan to eat lunch and let the kids play at the park.
If you’re ever in West Michigan you should put Allegan on your list of places to visit. The downtown sits on the Kalamazoo river, and I think it looks like it was frozen in time in about 1955. It’s the town time forgot. The little town you grew up in where the movie theater and variety store are still in business.
I took some pictures of downtown to show you, but I forgot to put the memory card in my camera. So, no pictures.
Allegan is also filled with antique stores. I love browsing for antiques. I did it a lot before I became a mom. Then lack of expendable income and fear that my children would break something I couldn’t afford to pay for put an end to it for the most part.
Well, Sunday we were feeling brave because of the warm weather and bright sunshine, so after eating lunch we ventured into an antique shop.
It was one of the most frightening things I’ve ever done.
“Shhh! Don’t touch that! Put that down! Look don’t touch! Don’t run. No you can’t have that toy. That toy is a hundred years old and worth more than all your toys together. Ah! CATCH THAT!”
It was like taking two tiny bulls into a china shop.
We managed to get out of there without breaking anything, and I found these:
I love this old tin kitchen canister. It matches the other red and white mid-twentieth century antiques I collect.
This old box of wax paper matches too. But what I really like is that it’s a local relic.
Spartan Stores are headquartered in West Michigan.
The other great thing about these pieces? They were a bargain totaling $6.50 for both.
Have you found anything good lately?
My sister-in-law student taught in Allegan. 😉
Love the Spartan pack of wax paper. So cool.
Mom says she likes the antique stores in Allegan too.
But you must be getting forgetful. How many pictures did you not take?
