This year the 4th of July came with a week-long heat wave and an even longer drought. Waiting out in a hot field of dead grass without any shade for the sun to set and fireworks in our town to start didn’t sound fun. So we headed for the lake shore instead.
South Haven, Michigan holds their fireworks on July 3rd right on the beach. We weren’t the only ones looking to cool off on a day when temperatures were in the high 90’s.
The beach was packed already when we arrived around 7 p.m., but it was about 10 degrees cooler with the breeze blowing off Lake Michigan.
We played in the water to stay cool while we waited.
I never get tired of the gorgeous sunsets over the lake.
Finally the fireworks started…
David watched in rapt awe. Wade didn’t like the loud “booms” at first and crawled onto Daddy’s lap.
The smiley face was a big hit with both the boys.
It took awhile to get out of town because of all the traffic afterward. It made for a late night, but it was well worth it. I don’t know if we’ll travel to the lake every year for fireworks, but it’s a West Michigan experience everyone should have at least once.
