I think the greatest thing about West Michigan is Lake Michigan and its beaches. It doesn’t get much better than the cool, clear water, and soft, clean sand that lines its shores.
I like to visit Lake Michigan as much as possible in the summer, but the truth is for little ones swimming in Lake Michigan isn’t always ideal. Strong rip currents can make it dangerous, and if the water is chilly children may not want to stay in very long. On a hot day it can be too warm to just play in the sand, and kids with a short attention span might even get board after an hour or two at the beach.
We like to head to Silver Beach in St. Joseph, Michigan with our kids. It has some extra amenities that make it perfect for families with young children to spend the day at the beach.
The big splash pad located just a short walk from the beach is a nice alternative to or break from the lake.
Right across from the splash pad kids can take a ride on the beach side carousel.
When everyone’s has enough sun and water, head a few blocks into downtown and visit the Curious Kids Museum.
Finish off the day with dinner at one St. Joe’s many family-friendly restaurants.
