The night before our trip six inches of fresh snow fell on top of the two feet already accumulated in our West Michigan yard. It was a blustery 22 degrees when we pulled out of our icy driveway that morning.
But we were on our way to a tropical getaway.
O.K. So maybe Ohio isn’t the first place you think of when you consider a winter escape to some place warm. But if you live in a Great Lake State you’re just a few hours drive away from the blue waters, crashing waves and warm temperatures at Cedar Fair’s Castaway Bay Indoor Waterpark and Resort in Sandusky, OH.
David and Wade were so excited when we arrived that Friday afternoon. As soon as the suitcases were in the room they were in their swimsuits and ready to go.
The Toddler’s Tide Pool was the perfect place for Wade. It’s shallow and has small slides just big enough to be fun for little ones. Big kids aren’t allowed in the wading pool, making it even safer for young kids.
The Lookout Lagoon Family Fun House with a giant tipping bucket was a favorite for David.
Here he is getting soaked.
Both the boys enjoyed the Creature Cove where they swam with floating sea creatures.
Castaway Bay supplies life jackets for non-swimmers like Wade so they can enjoy some of the deeper water attractions.
The Wave Pool was a hit with the whole family. Of course the park’s five water slides are the best part. Wade was too small for the large water slide structures, but David and even Dave and I enjoyed them.
We didn’t spend much time in our room other than to sleep, but there was plenty of space for the four of us. It was comfortable, and included a microwave and mini-fridge, which came in handy for late night snacks.
There’s so much to do at Castaway Bay we didn’t have a lot of down time to spend in our room. Family activities include arts and crafts, souvenir coloring, face painting and much more. The boys tried their hand at cookie decorating, and they colored their own beach towels to take home. Activities vary by day and hour, and may incur additional fees.
If you keep your eyes peeled you might even meet Snoopy like we did. He was even in his pajamas!
We also stopped by Crabbie’s Quarterdeck Arcade where there are lots of video games to entertain the whole family.
There are plenty of food options located right at the resort. We never had to leave the warmth of Castaway Bay. Friday night we enjoyed a pizza dinner from Big Daddy’s Pizza. For breakfast Saturday morning we feasted on the the fabulous buffet at Mango Mike’s. With fruit, cereal, pastries, pancakes, bacon and much more there was something everyone liked. Other dining choices at the resort include TGI Friday’s, Ebb&Eddy’s, Big Daddy’s Snack Shack and room service.
Our visit to Castaway Bay was a welcome escape from the cold and snow outside, and provided some much needed quality family time.
Castaway is currently offering specials including at one-night stay for just $129 that includes waterpark passes for up to four people.
