The Ten Most Freeing Moments of Motherhood

Posted on April 15, 2013

freedomWe love our kids, but tending to every need of little ones day after day can wear down even the most nurturing among us. Those small moments when they gain a bit of Independence can feel like Independence Day to us. F-R-E-E-D-O-M!

1. When your kid learns how to swing himself.

2. When she can comb her own hair.

3. The first time you leave the house with your kids in tow, and you don’t need to drag along a diaper bag filled with a enough supplies to survive a week in the wilderness.

4. When your kid learns how to operate the TV remote herself.

5. When your kid can pour his own glass of milk. Without spilling it.

6. When you ditch the diapers and training pants for good.

7. When he can feed himself.

8. When she can shower or bathe unsupervised.

9. When he can dress himself.

10. When you drop ALL your kids off at day camp and walk away.

What independent kid moments made you feel free?

Oh they all sound sooo good! We’re not at any of them yet but I can’t wait for the day. My daughter is three and can feed herself but can’t prepare her own food. There are great moments along the way, though.

When they can get the toothpaste out of the tube and on to the toothbrush and it stays on it until it goes into their mouth and they actually brush for longer than 2 seconds and rinse!

Love this list, but you missed the first one – when they can hold their own bottle! That’s the best!

Mine are a bit older but I’d have to say when I could let them go do things on their own…like walk downtown with a friend or go to the movies by themselves. It’s so hard when they start to assert their independence but once you get comfortable with it, its so freeing!

Leaving the house without diapers is the hall of fame best in our house. But my most recent new one was my 9 year old being able to remember to do her homework and study for quizzes on her own!
