Anti-Snow Day Ritual

Posted on January 7, 2014February 25, 2017

snowday2PLAINWELL, Michigan, January 7, Polar Vortex, Day three:

The natives are getting restless. They’ve watched ALL the movies, played ALL the games, eaten ALL the snacks and read ALL the books. We are running low on supplies: hot chocolate, chips and Elmer’s glue.

We’ve become so desperate in fact we’re mixing sugar with snow and eating it.

I’m not sure how much longer we can keep them contained before they launch a full-scale revolt. We squelched a small rebellion this afternoon when they attempted to repel from their loft bed with a sheet.

I’m starting to understand how the Donner party could do what they did.

If conditions don’t improve tomorrow we may attempt to leave with them anyway. We feel that a Mr. Chuck E. Cheese might be able to help.

If you don’t hear from me again, there’s a small stash of chocolate hidden in a box above the washing machine. Please put it to good use.

Godspeed

###

We’re on day three trapped inside the house by ice, snow and wind chills cold enough to freeze hell over.

It wouldn’t be so bad except we just had two weeks of Christmas vacation. Apparently you really can have too much relaxing family time.

The only way I’ve survived the last three days was by assuring myself we would indeed have a full day of school Wednesday, and everybody could get back to their regular routine. Then I saw talk of area schools canceling school tomorrow too. At the least we may have a 2 hour delay.

I just can’t take one more minute stuck in this house with all of them!

There are these rituals kids are said to perform is they want a snow day. Some are simple like wearing your pajamas inside out and placing a spoon under your pillow. Another is rather involved and requires you to flush ice down the toilet.

So I figure if we do the opposite of all these things maybe we can make sure there isn’t a snow day tomorrow. Parents of America I implore you, join me in performing the following ritual:

Wear your pajamas right side out, sleep with a fork under your pillow, and walk around your kitchen table 10 times while chanting, “School day! School day!” Then flush boiling hot water down the toilet, turn to your left six times, flush more hot water and turn to your right six times.

That should do it. Are you with me?

So ours have no school tomorrow either. WE don’t have the snow just the frigid temps, meaning no parent wants their child at a bus stop in that weather. Add in the fact that during the Christmas break we all got the Flu.. meaning they got to lay around and I got to suffer and care for all of them while attempting to continue to live when every part of my body ached. Such fun. Really.. oh sorry the bells just rang it is time for my meds and the nurse will be back to do a bed check. She gets mad when I get on her internet… shhhhh

The cold temps are terrible! I’m sure we’d be home with just those too. Stay warm!

    This is great!
We are in Hastings…35 mins or so East of you. We got cancelled AGAIN tomorrow. The email came after the kids were in bed, so they don’t know…but I have a feeling they are going to be a little bit disappointed.

I, on the other hand, think I might cry.

We got the call at 10 pm. I kept seeing more and more school added to the bottom of the TV screen. I knew they’d cancel eventually. My son really wants to go school. He missed his friends. He’ll be surprised when he wakes up tomorrow! I think I might cry too!

OMG – too funny. My child has no rituals, but she claims to have been happy not going to school. Don’t tell her, but I think the reason she doesn’t like school much this year is that she has a first year teacher. She means well, but she has not gotten her groove yet. You know? And my child is not dumb. 😉

We haven’t had it too bad here. The kids had school Monday and then delays yesterday and today. I’m tired of bringing them to work with me in the morning. I’m hoping they’ll have full days Thursday and Friday. Maybe I’ll add a little bleach to the boiling water and clean my toilet while I’m doing this ritual. At least I’d get a clean toilet out of it, if nothing else, right??

While I don’t have school age children this brutal cold has quite maddening for our family as well. Like you we have watched every kids movie, played play-doh, hide n’ seek and even baked cookies. The only thing that helped me keep my sanity was that my husband didn’t go into work Monday and Tuesday so he was able to help me when the boys wanted to play rough and tumble.

I never thought I would consider 12 degrees to be a warm up!

Lol! As a fellow Michigander, I agree to do the rituals, but only because I am a piano teacher and I really want my students to get back to lessons. 🙂 I like being stuck at home.

Oh–I feel for you. My kids went back today. I just had the two youngest at home and it was so calm and peaceful. I love having my kids home–but it’s so cold outside, they can’t go out and burn up their energy!

At this point I’m willing to do the fork/toilet chant if it will make school start back up! haha

My kids asked on Monday if they could have a snow day since the other kids in the neighborhood did and I told them no! There are no snow days in homeschool! Evil laughter followed.

I have totally heard the same rumblings from other mothers that I know! I can totally understand! We live in CO and we haven’t had any bad weather so thank goodness my son started back his half day preschool already!

OMG! I know you have to be pulling your hair out by now! I couldn’t imagine being stuffed inside the house in that type of weather! I am from the South and the last time it snowed in South Carolina has to be about almost 3-4 years ago! ((at least in the area where I stay)) of course schools were canceled and parents were going crazy in the madness. After about 2 days of that they were back in school. I pray for your sanity and patience during this time! LOL

Thank you for stopping by my blog! I will be stopping back to see your postings!

Now you have a small glimpse of a teacher’s life. Miltiply the number of kids you have times how many kids and you will hopefully get it. Then do it every day for nine months. And EDUCATE them too! God bless everyone who does this on a daily basis!

For a while there I had forgotten what it was like for the kids to have a school day. At least for this stay-at-home dad, it was quieter, the TV stayed off, lunch was lonelier and things seemed…well…boring. Don’t get me wrong, I breathed a sigh of relief and enjoyed the time to focus on work and “me” time. But I missed my boys.
