Do you have a young science geek in the house? David, my nine-year-old, loves math and science. He makes up equations for fun. He’s been building simple machines for years. Like the time he tried to rig up a laundry basket to hoist his then baby brother to the top of his loft bed. Whenever he learns some new science-related information, he monopolizes the conversation at the dinner table explaining it us. Then there are all the questions he asks that I can’t answer unless I Google them. He doesn’t get these interests from me, but I think they’re fantastic and do my part to encourage him.
If you have a kid like David, I put together this gift guide to help you put the perfect presents under the tree this year. We don’t have all these items at our house, but David says, “Oh, yeah! I’d want that!” about all these, so I bet your young scientist will like them too.
Kits
Snap Circuits SC-300 Physics Kit – If you have a budding electrical engineer in the house, they’ll have hours of fun with this Snap Circuits kit. They can make their own electronic devices that actually work like an AM radio, burglar alarm, doorbell and much more. They can even create electronic games.
4M Tin can robot – Turn a soda can into a walking, wobbling, bug-eyed robot that moves!
SmartLab Toys Extreme Secret Formula – Twenty experiments that include making glow in the dark alien blood and scratch and sniff stickers. Your young scientist will have tons of fun using a beaker, test tubes and common household staples.
Books
Minecraft: The Complete Handbook Collection – David is a big Minecraft fan, and we have this set of books already. He consults them all the time. It contains tips and tricks to help them get the most out of playing the came.
Computer Coding Workbook – Step-by-step explanations and interactive projects will help your child learn the fundamentals of Python programming and important coding terms and phrases. Give them a head start on this important 21st century skill.
Mythbusters Science Fair Book – David loves watching Mythbusters. This book is packed with experiments for home and school based on the show.
Clothing
Technically The Glass Is Always Full Kids’ T-shirt – For the scientist with a sense of humor.
Kids’ Periodic Table Long Sleeve Shirt – For the chemistry lover.
Stand Back I’m Going To Try Science – Yep. Always a good idea to stand back a few feet when David is at work.
Hardware
Fire HD Kids Edition – This is a fairly new product from Amazon. David has it, and I think it’s great for kids. It’s extra sturdy, comes with a protective cover and if they break of lose it within the first two years Amazon replaces it free, no questions asked! The last feature was the selling point for me, because I figure it’s inevitable that it will get broken. Now my investment is protected.
It comes with a year of Kindle Free Time which includes access to 5,000 books, movies, TV shows, educational apps, and games—at no additional cost. It also has amazing parental controls. Using a password, parents can control what kids can access, when they can access it and even how long they can access it every day. But it is a fully functional tablet allowing you to watch Amazon Prime movies and TV shows, Netflix, Youtube, surf the web and read and send email. Kids can also play popular games like Minecraft and Angry Birds.
My First Lab Duo-Scope Microscope – Every scientist needs a microscope. This is a great one for kids just starting out.
PowerSeeker Telescope – You want your kids to reach for the stars, so why not help them get an up close look at the night sky? Actually, I wouldn’t mind having this for myself.
Most items on this list include free shipping for Amazon Prime Members. Join Amazon Prime – Watch Over 40,000 Movies & TV Shows Anytime – Start Free Trial Now
