It’s hard to find movies our whole family can watch together that aren’t animated. When the Game Stands Tall is one exception to that.
When the De La Salle High School football team suddenly comes to the end of its 151 game winning streak, the players and Coach Bob Ladouceur are forced to learn the hard way that it really doesn’t matter whether you win or lose, but how you play the game. The movie includes life lessons on friendship, love, loss and perseverance. Throughout the movie Coach Ladouceur’s Christian faith plays a prominent role in shaping how he reacts and deals with difficult events, including the death of a player.
Sports fans will enjoy the action scenes on the field and be inspired by the story of finding triumph in the midst of defeat. This movie would make a great Christmas gift for any high school or college athletes on you your Christmas list. There’s also plenty of drama off the field to make it appealing to anyone looking for family friendly entertainment. It’s rated PG, and Dove Family Approved for ages 12 and up.
I’ve found watching movies like this one together as family can be a great way to start a conversation with your kids about your own family values. Afterward take the time to talk about the situations the characters found themselves in. Discuss if they made the right decisions. Ask your kids what they would do if they found themselves in the same shoes. Explain to them what you think the right reaction might be. Thinking and talking through fictional problems now can help kids react appropriately if ever faced with similar ones in real life.
