I love having this green smoothie for breakfast. My boys even like this one, because the orange and banana flavors cover up the “green” taste. This always gives us extra energy, and it keeps us full until lunch. It’s also fast to make, and portable. So this green smoothie is perfect for busy mornings.
I wanted to add veggies to our smoothies, because is there an easier way to get kids to eat vegetables than by liquefying and making them undetectable? But other green smoothies always had an after-taste that reminded me of the scent of fresh lawn clippings. I’m not a fan of eating grass, and I knew my boys would never drink those smoothies. So I experimented until I came up with a healthy green smoothie combination that also tasted good.
You’ll need one frozen banana, one peeled orange, one cup of fresh spinach, one cup of vanilla yogurt and one cup of unsweetened vanilla almond milk.
You can use regular milk also, which I do sometimes. The almond milk tastes just a little better, I think. As for the yogurt, use your favorite brand and variety. I use Dannon Light and Fit yogurt. For the frozen bananas, I buy a bunch at the store every week, peel them, break them in half and freeze them in a Ziploc. Using frozen bananas eliminates the need for adding ice to your smoothie. You can also add sweetener to this green smoothie if you want to kick up the flavor a notch. Plain old sugar works. Honey, maple syrup or stevia are healthier options. I usually use a tablespoon of honey when I make this for the boys.
To make the smoothie, just pulverize all the ingredients in your blender.. Then you’ll have a green smoothie that tastes more like an orangesicle than a cup of freshly squeezed Kentucky Bluegrass.
This recipe makes four cups. I drink the whole smoothie, and it keeps me from getting hungry until lunch time. When I make it for the boys, I split it into two servings. It’s easy to halve the recipe too, if you want a smaller, single serving.

A green smoothie without the green taste!
- 1 Frozen Banana
- 1 Orange, peeled
- 1 cup Fresh Spinach
- 1 cup Almond Milk
- 1 cup Vanilla Yogurt
- 1 tbsp Sweetener Optional
Put all the ingredients in a blender and blend until smooth.
